What to watch when pricing a tile bid
Tile work has thin margins for error: areas need to be measured precisely, waste factor accounted for, and waterproofing priced as its own line item. A typical bathroom carries 10–15% waste, but large-format tile (24×24+) can push waste to 20% due to cutting. Mosaic loses only ~5% but the labor is several times more expensive.
Code requires waterproof shower walls and floors and waterproof joints; full-membrane systems (Schluter-Kerdi, RedGard) are industry best practice and the standard on quality bids.
