Concrete bid estimation: where do the costs come from?
Concrete bid estimation differs from many other trades because the cost splits into four independent items: the concrete itself (per cubic yard), reinforcement (per pound or ton), formwork (per square foot of contact area) and the placement labor. A volume price alone is not enough — a thin cast-in-place wall can cost more in formwork area than in concrete volume. That is why the quantity takeoff must separate every structure: footings, slabs-on-grade and elevated slabs, walls, columns and beams are each calculated as their own line item by volume, formwork area and steel weight.
Concrete strength is chosen according to the structure's exposure and load requirements, typically specified per ACI 318. Slabs-on-grade commonly use around 3,000–4,000 psi, foundations and load-bearing structures 4,000–5,000 psi, and demanding targets higher. A higher strength class and special mixes — air-entrained for freeze-thaw resistance or low-permeability watertight concrete, for example — raise the per-yard price, so strength classes must be priced per structure rather than using a single average across the whole project.
The single biggest source of error in a concrete bid is mis-estimating waste and formwork reuse. Concrete waste is around 3–5 % in footings and slabs but 8–12 % in column and beam pours, because small pours leave proportionally more pump-line residue and overfill. Formwork, on the other hand, is usually reused across several pours, so pricing the formwork area as single-use inflates the bid. Cold-weather concreting — heating, hot-water mixes, protection and a longer curing time — adds cost substantially and must be accounted for when pours fall in the winter season.
