Rebar bid estimation — AI calculates weight for you
Rebar bid estimation starts with calculating steel quantities. Massoi reads structural drawings and calculates steel weight, mesh quantities, and lap lengths automatically.
Reinforcement bid estimation: weight, splices and labor
Reinforcement bid estimation is based on steel weight, and that weight must be taken off the structural drawings bar by bar: for each bar you record the size (for example #4, #5, #6), the count, the length and from that the weight (pounds per foot). A #4 bar weighs about 0.668 lb/ft, a #5 about 1.043 lb/ft and a #6 about 1.502 lb/ft, so identifying the bar size directly affects the total weight. A single footing can contain several bar sizes — longitudinal bars, stirrups and dowels — each calculated as its own line item.
The theoretical bar length shown on the drawing is not enough, because lap splices add to the quantity. The lap length depends on the bar size, the concrete strength and the bond conditions, and per ACI 318 it runs to many bar diameters. Long bars are cut and spliced, so every splice adds weight, and hooks and bends also consume more steel than a straight dimension. These must be accounted for before the weight is priced.
Reinforcement cost splits into material (per pound) and labor (per pound), and the labor share varies sharply with the complexity of the reinforcement. Welded wire mesh is fast to place and waste is low (3–5 %), whereas dense loose-bar reinforcement in columns and beams is slow and waste rises to 8–12 % from cutting and bending. Shop-cut and pre-bent (fabricated) bar reduces field waste and speeds placement but raises the material unit price — this trade-off is worth calculating per project.
Massoi calculates reinforcement weight from the structural drawings automatically: it identifies bar sizes, calculates counts, lengths and total weights, and breaks out mesh in square feet. With the weights ready per structure, the contractor can price material and labor separately and add a realistic splice and waste allowance — instead of counting hundreds of bars by hand.
Challenges in rebar bid estimation
Hundreds of bars per structure
A single footing can have 4-6 different bar sizes, stirrups, longitudinal bars, and dowels. The quantity, length, and weight of each must be calculated.
Lap lengths and bends
Rebar lap lengths depend on bar size and concrete strength. Bends increase material consumption.
Price per pound varies greatly
Rebar work price ranges from $0.80-1.50/lf installed — a small error in weight multiplies in dollars for jobs with tens of thousands of pounds of steel.

Frequently asked questions about rebar bid estimation
How are rebar quantities calculated for a bid?
Rebar quantities are calculated from structural drawings by counting bar quantities, lengths, and weights. For mesh, square feet are calculated. Lap lengths depend on bar size and concrete strength. Bends are accounted for separately.
How much does rebar work cost per pound?
Rebar installation labor (without material) costs $0.35-0.60/lb. A turnkey package including materials costs $0.80-1.50/lf for #4 bar. Price is affected by complexity and installation conditions.
What is the waste percentage for rebar?
Rebar waste varies by method. Welded wire mesh has 3-5% waste (minimal cutting waste). Loose bars have 8-12% waste due to cuts and bends. Pre-fabricated bars reduce waste by 2-4 percentage points.
